jeff gardner
Graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts, Fine Art – Painting from the Victorian College of Arts, Jeff Gardner was awarded the National Gallery Society Scholarship.
Jeff hovered around Printmaking until the late 1990’s. It was while working as a builder’s labourer he took with him on the train a small box of cardboard printing plates and scratched into these with a sharpened nail as he journeyed back and forth from the job sites around Melbourne. A successful exhibition resulted from these very tiny plates. They proved themselves not only as a form of income but also as a natural way to “draw his brain out flat”. Jeff moved to central Victoria in 2001 which marked a shift in his work towards ‘figure in the landscape’ which gave rise to a series of evocative oil paintings. Signature circular figures under the curving horizon line of his imaginary landscape combine with free associative floating symbols of home, love, family and motifs found in the everyday. His picture worlds evoke a domestic poetic narrative.
Jeff Gardner makes his living from selling his paintings, from framing other artist’s exhibitions and wholesaling his prints to numerous print shops around Australia. Cascade Print Workshop is dedicated to promoting the work of artists who are original of thought and professional in practice
